Mastering an Uphill Lie

Time Tested Tips for Amateur Golfers

An uphill lie happens more often than you realize. Golf rarely offers a perfectly flat lie on every shot. When you face an uphill lie, which is a golf ball on an upslope, with your lead foot higher than your trail foot, the slope can dramatically affect the ball’s flight. Understanding these effects and adjusting your technique is key to hitting these shots solidly. I see this happen with many higher handicappers. Whether attending a Florida Golf School with me, one of the most trusted golf instructors in Florida. Or you’re a private client of mine participating in private coaching sessions. If an uphill lie is a problem for you and you’re searching for the best golf coaches in Florida to help you, I can make that happen for you.

Within this blog post, I’ll break down the essential steps you’ll need to know how:

  1. An uphill lie alters the trajectory of your shot.
  2. The distance the shot will travel.
  3. How to alter your decision making and set up to accommodate for those alterations to your shots.
  4. And provide a few tips so you can hit better shots from uphill lies.

How the Slope of an Uphill Lie Affects Ball Trajectory and Distance

A lot of amateur golfers ask me why their shots from an uphill lie seem to fly higher and not travel as far. Sometimes the answer is obvious by how much of a hill your ball lies on.  But sometimes a hill’s slope is slight. And shadows or various light conditions can hide the fact your ball is lying on an uphill lie. Making it difficult sometimes to force yourself to set up for the lie.

Gravity may be fighting you as you swing. But ensuring you fully finish your swing when faced with an uphill lie is essential to your success.

When your golf ball is lying on a hill, the hill adds “effective loft” to your golf club at impact. What does this mean? Think of your ball on a flat lie and we secure the golf club behind the ball with a vice. We then slowly raise the ground in front of the golf ball. As we do, and the club is secured to the ground, the loft of the club increases. As the slope of the ground increases toward the target, more loft is added to the club. As you add loft to a club, the ball travels higher and not as far. Effectively turning an 8-iron into a 9-iron, or even a pitching wedge.

Higher launch and less distance in the air force you to choose a golf club with less loft. To offset the amount of loft added because your ball is on an uphill lie. Check your ego at the door when faced with an uphill lie and take more club. Landing short of your intended target adds shots to your score. And is an avoidable outcome if you “club up” for this type of lie.

Direction is Affected Too

Not only does an uphill slope alter distance, but it also influences direction. Shots from an uphill lie tend to pull or hook (go left for a right-hander, the opposite for the left-hander). The ball often “rolls along the slope” in flight since the slope tilts your swing plane, the ball’s spin can cause a draw or hook curve. Biomechanics studies confirm this. Why? Because in practical terms, your lower body movement is restricted, possibly causing your hands to “flip” the club closed. You’ll need to adjust your aim to accommodate for the draw or hook curvature. As well as do your best to swing as normally as you can, related to your weight shift turning into the hill.

Your slice or fade will seem a little straighter when hitting a shot from an uphill lie.

Although the ball’s launch angle increases on uphill lies, ball speed tends to remain almost the same as if you hit the shot from a flat lie. This means you might strike the ball just as solidly. But more of the energy goes into lifting the ball higher rather than sending it forward. Higher trajectory shots also produce a little more spin and steeper landing angles. Again, having your shot land shorter than normal but softer than normal as well.

Keeping all this information simple, it’s a very safe assumption your uphill lie shots will produce higher than normal trajectories, shorter shot distances, and softer landings. While also potentially reducing your slice or fade.

Common Mistakes Golfers Make with an Uphill Lie

As one of the best golf instructors in Florida, I do tend to be repetitive at times. But only to drive a few points home to you, uphill lies can be tricky. And you may struggle with these types of shots at first, due to a few common mistakes you’ll make prior to executing the uphill lie golf shot.

  • Under-clubbing or Not Taking Enough ClubProbably the biggest mistake amateurs make is using the same club you would for a flat lie from the same distance. If you typically do this, you are obviously underestimating how much distance your losing due to the uphill lie adding loft to your golf club. Failing to club up will make your shots come up short of your intended target.
  • Improper Setup of Your ShouldersAnother common error you’re probably making is addressing the ball as if it were on a flat lie. With your shoulders and hips angled into the uphill lie. Versus angled parallel with the uphill lie. Making clean club to ball contact difficult. Getting your shoulders parallel to the slope your on will avoid your club from contacting the ground before the golf ball. Leaning into the hill to force your weight forward throws off your balance and steepens your swing.
  • Ball Position and Your Swing Low PointLeaving your ball position “as is” with an uphill actually moves your ball position forward of the low point of your golf swing. Leading to chunky shots because your swing bottoms out behind the ball. A slight adjustment of ball position towards the middle of your stance, regardless of the golf club you are using, is a simple yet effective way to solve this issue.
  • Losing Balance BackwardsAn uphill lie can make it easy for you to lose balance. Especially when you make a full or hard swing and can’t get all the way through the shot due to the slope you’re on. Causing you to fall backwards. Remember that gravity is pulling you down the slope. And if you’re leaning backwards before you make that full and aggressive swing, you could be setting yourself up to fall backwards. Lunging forward to fight the hill is not the answer. You’ll need to adjust with your set up balance to insure you’re stable before, during, and after your swing.
  • Not Adjusting Your Aim for the Curvature – Your slice or fade will seem a little straighter when hitting a shot from an uphill lie. And if you already hit a draw, expect more of it from an uphill lie. Because your club face is closing a bit sooner than normal, you’ll need to make an adjustment to accommodate for this. Not adjusting your aim for this to happen often leads to errant shots left or right of your target. Potentially having your shot land in a condition you were supposed to avoid.
  • Trying to Help Lift the Shot – The less experienced golfer instinctively tries to lift the ball up the hill by hanging back and scooping. Often resulting in poor contact and chunky shots. If you look at the shot from a profile perspective, you’ll realize the uphill lie lifts the ball for you. Avoid the scoopy fat shot by setting up correctly and trusting the slope will create the lift your looking for, if not more.

Try your best to remember, recognize, and adjust to these common mistakes. Doing so will reduce your score immediately.

Let’s Review

To properly execute the uphill lie shot, you should:

  1. Club Up – Take More Club should be the first order of business when faced with an uphill lie.
Mastering an Uphill Lie, John Hughes Golf, Your slice or fade will seem a little straighter when hitting a shot from an uphill lie.
When faced with an uphill lie, it’s important that your shoulders are set up to match the slope of the hill you’re on.
  1. Match Your Shoulders to the Slope – Set your body angles parallel to the hill at address. With your trail shoulder lower than your lead shoulder, mirroring the upslope angle.
  2. Weight Distribution – On an uphill lie, your weight will naturally favor your back foot and that’s okay. Don’t try to fight gravity by doing the opposite. It’s okay to start with a bit more weight on your rear foot and keep it there throughout the swing. You should attempt to complete your weight shift forward as best as you can without fighting gravity
  3. Ball Position – Always start you ball position by placing it in the middle of your stance. And make practice swings on the slope to find out where the low point of your swing is in reference to the middle of your stance. Make whatever adjustment necessary to your ball position to accommodate low point and ensure you hit the ball first, not the earth.
  4. Aim – Uphill lie shots tend to straighten fades and create draws from straight shots. You’ll have to adjust your aim according to the severity of the slope and how much it will straighten or draw your shot.
  5. Swing Normal, Swing Smooth – No need to swing out of your shoes if you’ve accomplished the first 5 steps in this review. Find your balance in your set up and maintain your balance throughout the swing. Finish fully, if possible. And don’t fight gravity. Because you’ve taken more club, you don’t need to swing harder. A smooth, balanced swing will deliver the solid contact your looking for.
  6. Practice – You’re probably practicing a lot on flat conditions. Why not seek out an uphill lie just off the practice area tee and practice the shot? Doing so for 5 minutes within a practice session will serve its purpose when faced with these shots on the course.

Conclusion

Uphill lies are not as tough a condition as some others you’ll face on the golf course. And with some practice making the necessary adjustments, you’ll conquer uphill lies in no time.

Following the set up and swing adjustments highlighted within this post is the easy part. Being committed to making these adjustments happen on the course is the hard part. Committing practice time in the near future to learn how you handle this uneven lie is in your best interest. Doing so will significantly improve your performance on uphill lies. And your fear of hitting these shots will disappear knowing you now have a clear plan to handle these shots.
