Championship Golf at The Homestead – The Cascades & Old Course

The Omni Homestead’s golf facilities include two championship layouts: The Cascades Course and The Old Course. Both courses have their own clubhouse, full driving ranges, and short-game practice areas, so you can hone your skills before teeing off. The Cascades Course is a mountain masterpiece set against the breathtaking Allegheny Mountains. Designed by William S. Flynn in 1923, the Cascades features rolling terrain, fast greens, and spring-fed streams that challenge players of all levels. It’s consistently ranked among the top courses in the U.S. – in fact, Cascades has been rated the #1 course in Virginia and regularly appears in national “Best Courses You Can Play” lists. Playing the Cascades is a must for any serious golfer visiting VA, with strategic holes that have tested PGA Tour events and even U.S. presidents.

The Old Course at The Homestead is a historic gem boasting the nation’s oldest first tee in continuous use.. First opened in 1892 and later updated by legendary architects (including Donald Ross and Rees Jones), The Old Course offers a unique 6,099-yard, par-72 layout consisting of six par-3s, six par-4s, and six par-5s. This balanced design makes every round interesting and fun. Don’t let the yardage fool you – the Old Course’s small greens and classic routing will challenge your course management and shot-making. It’s perennially ranked among the best golf courses in Virginia, and was recently listed in Golf Digest’s “Best Courses You Can Play” and Golfweek’s Top 200 Resort Courses. Golf history runs deep here: Sam Snead, one of golf’s greatest champions, grew up as a caddie at The Homestead and launched his career on these fairways. Snead went on to win 82 PGA Tour events – a record that still stands – giving The Homestead a special place in golf lore. When you play these courses, you walk in the footsteps of Snead and countless other legends who have been drawn to The Homestead golf course experience.

Luxury Resort Amenities and Activities for All

The Omni Homestead Resort & Spa is far more than just great golf courses – it’s an iconic luxury mountain resort with over 250 years of history. Designated a National Historic Landmark, the resort exudes Southern charm and elegant hospitality. Guests can choose from hundreds of beautifully appointed rooms and suites (including updated rooms after a $150 million renovation in 2023) that make a perfect home base for your golf school vacation. On-site, you’ll find 11 dining outlets ranging from casual tavern fare to fine dining. Savor farm-to-table Appalachian cuisine in the historic main dining room, unwind with a craft beer at Jefferson’s Taproom, or grab a quick sandwich at Martha’s Market before your tee time. There’s something to satisfy every taste.

One of The Homestead’s crown jewels is its award-winning Spa and Warm Springs Pools. The resort sits atop natural hot springs, and for centuries, visitors have come to “take the waters” in the famous octagonal bathhouses. Recently restored and reopened to the public, the Warm Springs Pools let you soak in mineral-rich, 98°F spring water inside authentic 19th-century wooden bathhouses – a truly unique and relaxing experience you won’t find elsewhere. In the adjacent Spa, you can indulge in modern wellness treatments, massages, an Aqua Thermal Suite, and a tranquil outdoor Spa Garden with a geothermal spring-fed pool. After a day on the golf course, nothing beats soothing your muscles in these natural hot springs and spa amenities.

Beyond golf and spa time, The Omni Homestead Resort offers an array of activities for golfers and non-golfers alike. Enjoy the outdoor Allegheny Springs water park, featuring a heated pool, whirlpool, water slides, and a lazy river – perfect for cooling off in summer. The resort also features indoor and outdoor pools, four Har-Tru tennis courts, and a state-of-the-art fitness center. Adventurers can explore hiking and biking trails on the 2,300-acre property or go horseback riding through the wooded mountain trails. If you’re up for a thrill, try the Cascade Gorge hike, sporting clays at the Shooting Club, or the Zip Line Tours that soar through the treetops. History buffs will enjoy the nightly historic tour of the resort, and every evening you can roast marshmallows at the fire pit with the Homestead’s tradition of s’mores roasting. There’s even a private movie theater (Theater 1923) on-site and a Kids’ Club program to keep young ones entertained, making it a fantastic destination for families, too.
